Using Google and Evaluating Internet Resources

google-76522_1280Learn about the existence of Bias and Quality in online resources, how to evaluate a web resource for quality and identify where web resources may be of poor quality. Also learn how to discuss the quality found in online resources during patient interactions.

This short and entertaining talk is an hour long discussion, with interesting real life examples, however you will have the opportunity to discuss the subject after with the training librarian.

Advanced Literature Searching Training

The session will cover how to find articles using healthcare databases: MEDLINE, Embase, Cinahl, BNI, PsycINFO. It will also cover creating an evidence based search strategy and the downloading of full-text articles and references.

This is the advanced session which is suitable for staff undertaking comprehensive in depth research for dissertations, clinical work and guideline or systematic review production.

You will be provided with an iPad or laptop for the duration of the training however if you feel more comfortable with your own device you are welcome to bring it.

Library lendable iPads now available

IMG_20151022_133413982_HDRThe library now has a selection of iPads available for loan. Setup with all the most popular library resources such as ClinicalKey, UpToDate and Read by QXMD. You are able to take these on a 24 hour loan with your library card if they are not reserved for training.

You can install your own apps on these devices, and they come equipped with a keyboard for ease of typing. All devices will be securely wiped upon return.

You will require an Athens account to access many of our resources, so apply for one from the library iPads or at Athens Self Registration.

Critical Appraisal: 

The following dates are available for the regular Critical Appraisal training

  • Tuesday October 13th at 3pm
  • Tuesday November 3rd at 9am
  • Wednesday November 18th at 9am

Beyond Google: 

The library will be running a hands-on training session called ‘Beyond Google: Searching for the Evidence’. Learn about locating evidence-based resources in NHS Evidence, searching for up-to-date NICE guidelines and systematic reviews, applying for passwords and making best use of electronic resources in your work. This training session is suitable for all staff levels, and all levels of knowledge.

You will be provided with an iPad or laptop for the duration of the training however if you feel more comfortable with your own laptop or tablet you are welcome to bring it.

Available dates are:

  • Wednesday 25th of November 4-6PM
