SAS Evening Event

turmeric-2344157_640This evenings educational event will include a demonstration of the new Discovery Service and a basic literature search by Mr. William Henderson, Assistant Librarian, followed by a discussion on the Critical Appraisal of Systematic Reviews by Mr. John Barbrook, Head of Library and Learning Resources.

The library services offer regular training sessions on a range of topics, and we offer group and one-to-one sessions. We can organise custom training programs for departments, from one hour to all day training, depending on need.

All sessions are free of charge for all staff in Bedfordshire, and Certificates are given where attendance is for portfolios and revalidation.

Evidence-Based Literature Searching

Our most popular sessions, these can range from Basic Literature Searching using evidence-based resources such as NHS Evidence, to more in-depth training where we discuss searching through databases such as MEDLINE and CINAHL, and using thesaurus terms to produce a high-quality search strategy suitable for research or study. We rarely cover all topics in individual sessions but advertise a range of differing needs-based training based on different user groups.

Evidence Based Literature Searching Sessions

 Thursday November 22nd 10am – 12pm and Tuesday December 12th 11am – 1pm

Our most popular session, ran over two hours where we discuss creating a clinical question using PICO, and search using keywords through major databases such as CINAHL and MEDLINE while producing a search strategy for inclusion in guidelines, publications and assignments/dissertations.

Searching the Evidence for Midwives and Nurses

 Wednesday November 15th 3.30pm – 4.30pm

A short 1 hour session aimed at busy Nurses and Midwives on how to find high quality evidence. Find guidelines, systematic reviews and more that you can use in your clinical practice without worrying about quality and bias.

Critical Appraisal Sessions

Thursday November 16th 2-5pm and Tuesday January 16th 1.30 – 4.30pm

Learn to critically appraise a Randomised Control Trial. Learn about subjects such as allocation and ascertainment bias, study types, confounders and validity. We always choose a different paper to review in each session, so staff are encouraged to attend if they wish to practice skills learnt in a previous session.

Finding the Evidence – Evidence Quality, Clinical Questions and Literature Searching Afternoon

 Tuesday January 30th 12pm – 4.30pm

An afternoon training session suitable for any staff who would like to commit to an longer training session. The session will cover topics in greater depth such as evidence quality, formulating a clinical question and performing an in-depth literature search suitable for inclusion in an academic paper or review. We will include a short section on referencing, and we encourage you to bring your own personal laptops, if you have them for the installation of referencing software.

Over the summer the library will be offering a number of training sessions, open to all hospital staff, Medical Students, GPs and Public Health staff in Luton and Bedfordshire.

Searching The Evidence

Learn about ‘Levels of Evidence’, high quality evidence such as systematic reviews and the concept of ‘Best Evidence’. Practice searching through online resources to quickly identify high quality resources , including guidelines and evidence summaries usable both in personal research and clinical work.

Searching the Evidence for Midwives, Nurses and Students

In this short 1 hour session for the busy professional we discuss the best resources to support both study, decision making and revalidation. We will introduce the concepts of CPD tracking in Best Practice, Evidence-Based Searching and ‘Best Evidence’

Introduction to the Critical Appraisal of RCTs

This introduction to Critical Appraisal is aimed at the busy clinician or nurse who is new to this very important subject. Condensing this complex subject into a 3 hour session we will look at why we need to critically appraise published research, common types of bias and error frequently found in papers, and how to critically appraise a Randomised Control Trial.

Using Google and Evaluating Internet Resources

google-76522_1280Learn about the existence of Bias and Quality in online resources, how to evaluate a web resource for quality and identify where web resources may be of poor quality. Also learn how to discuss the quality found in online resources during patient interactions.

This short and entertaining talk is an hour long discussion, with interesting real life examples, however you will have the opportunity to discuss the subject after with the training librarian.

Advanced Literature Searching Training

The session will cover how to find articles using healthcare databases: MEDLINE, Embase, Cinahl, BNI, PsycINFO. It will also cover creating an evidence based search strategy and the downloading of full-text articles and references.

This is the advanced session which is suitable for staff undertaking comprehensive in depth research for dissertations, clinical work and guideline or systematic review production.

You will be provided with an iPad or laptop for the duration of the training however if you feel more comfortable with your own device you are welcome to bring it.

Beyond Google: 

The library will be running a hands-on training session called ‘Beyond Google: Searching for the Evidence’. Learn about locating evidence-based resources in NHS Evidence, searching for up-to-date NICE guidelines and systematic reviews, applying for passwords and making best use of electronic resources in your work. This training session is suitable for all staff levels, and all levels of knowledge.

You will be provided with an iPad or laptop for the duration of the training however if you feel more comfortable with your own laptop or tablet you are welcome to bring it.
